OEM VW Belts And Hoses

Belts and Hoses at a Glance

Your Volkswagen car or SUV has almost as many different belts and hoses as major automotive systems. You probably have questions about both. Luckily, our auto parts store has some answers. Here are the basics.

What Do Belts Do?

They move auto parts mechanically.

What are the Different Types of Belts and What Do They Do?

There are three: serpentine, drive, and timing. They work together, helping to move parts in the alternator, power steering pump, and AC compressor, among others. They also help turn the engine's crankshaft and camshaft, so its valves and pistons can synchronize.

What Do Hoses Do?

They move auto parts hydraulically.

What are the Different Types of Hoses and What Do They Do?

There are many, for your radiator, brakes, air intake, and more. There are even hoses for oil coolers and positive crankcase ventilation valves or PCV valves.

What are the Signs of Bad Belts and Hoses?

Look for your VW vehicle not running right, generally, if not its complete disablement. To get a better idea of what's going on, though, you should look for:

  • Looseness and/or visible damage
  • Belt screeches and/or chirps
  • Fluid leaking from hoses
  • Fluid leaks under your vehicle
  • Battery problems
  • Interior lighting malfunctions
  • Engine misfires
  • Engine overheats
  • Being unable to start your vehicle
  • Systems failures

How Often Do Belts Need to be Changed?

That varies according to mileage. Review your owner's manual to get more details. Most hoses, though, you should replace about every 4 years.
