Types of Brake Systems

There are two -- drum and disc. A master brake cylinder, one or more brake pistons, and brake lines and hoses make up both.

How Do Brakes Work?

The process starts when your brake pedal is pressed. The pistons travel the bore in the cylinder, pressurizing brake fluid. That fluid gets sent through the lines and hoses. In drum brakes, the fluid makes brake drums and brake shoes clamp together. In disc brakes, it makes brake calipers with brake pads attached clamp to brake rotors.

What these processes do is the same either way: they create friction, which your vehicle uses to slow down and come to a stop.

How Long Do Brakes Generally Last?

The answer depends on their condition, not your vehicle's mileage. Use a brake long enough, though, and it'll get worn out eventually.

So, How Do I Know if I Need to Replace My Brakes?

The best way to tell is to look for the signs. Warnings on your dashboard are one. Shuddering, sideways drift, and unusual noises when braking are others. Others yet include an abnormally low or soft brake pedal, grinding noises, and less brake grip and longer slowing and stopping times than usual. Grinds usually indicate direct contact between rotors and calipers because pads have worn out.

How Do I Tell Which Brake Parts Need Replacing?

Do a careful brake inspection. Check your pedal, fluid, lines and hoses, and the brake assemblies, plus your parking brake. If it turns out you need new brake parts, you're in luck: you can order them online, right here.
