OEM VW Exhaust Parts

Exhaust Systems at a Glance

The engine in your Volkswagen car or SUV burns fuel for power. In doing so, like all engines, it creates noxious byproducts. They'd make you and your passengers sick, not to mention pollute the environment, if it wasn't for the vehicle's exhaust system.

The job of an exhaust is to capture and safely remove such contaminants, while allowing cleaner gases (mainly, carbon dioxide and water vapor) to pass through the system and out into the air.

How Exhaust Works

First, toxins go through a catalytic converter. There, metals such as platinum, rhodium, and palladium trap and contain them. The molecules get split into oxygen and nitrogen; the latter gets trapped, while the former continues on.

During the process, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide burn up, and cleaner fumes result. A resonator and muffler help make sure they can flow freely, and an exhaust manifold sends them down an exhaust pipe. They then pass out the muffler's tail pipe, dispersing afterward.

The Signs an Exhaust is Bad and Needs Replacing

There are several, but you can usually spot them well before exhaust failure. They include:

  • A lit Check Engine warning
  • A drop in fuel economy
  • Unusual noises coming from the muffler and exhaust pipe
  • A "rotten-egg" odor

The best way to figure out what parts might be the causes is to do an exhaust inspection. Be sure to replace any that the results demand changing.

When to Change an Exhaust

Of course, that depends on the part. You should replace the catalytic converter every 100,000 miles and the muffler and/or resonator every 2 to 4 years. You can order what you need for repairs right here online, at our auto parts store.
