OEM VW Oil Filters

Oil Filters at a Glance

For all the good motor oil does as a lubricant for the engine in a Volkswagen car or SUV, it still contains impurities from its production process. Plus, it accumulates them from the environment surrounding engine parts as it greases. If that pollution got into everything, it'd build up, starting to wear out the oil pump, its bearings, and more. Luckily, your vehicle has an oil filter to help capture those contaminants.

Unfortunately, oil filters don't last indefinitely. If the one you've got gets clogged, degrades, or wears out, more often than not, engine problems follow.

What are the Symptoms of a Bad Oil Filter?

You're in luck. They're fairly easy to spot. They include:

  • Dirty exhaust
  • Low oil pressure, indicating a leak
  • A sputtering engine
  • Metallic noises coming from the engine

The best way to avoid such problems? Be sure to change your oil filter regularly.

When to Change Oil Filters

Take care of it during every oil change. You can also do it during every other oil flush and replacement. Unless you have an extended-life oil filter, which can last 10,000 miles or so, replacement should happen every 3,000 to 5,000 miles or every 3 months, whichever comes first.

What Oil Filter Does My VW Need?

That depends on the thread and gasket sizes your owner's manual specifies. Be sure to install filters that actually fit your vehicle. Putting on the wrong size can cause an oil leak, or worse, the filter can detach, which can cause serious and expensive engine damage.

Fortunately, Volkswagen makes figuring out what fits easy: their oil filters already come designed to spec for their models. You can order one online from our auto parts store.
